In 1926, Fort Myers soldiers were assigned to guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier during daylight hours to ensure that visitors were not disrespecting the tomb by climbing or stepping on it. The guards became a 24/7 presence in 1937 who now perform a specific march when guarding. These guards also go through a strict selection process and intensive training to be able to honor and serve at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial
A representation of the nation’s gratitude to Marines and those who have fought beside them is the purpose of this memorial. The statue stands at 32 feet high and is shown raising a 60-foot bronze flagpole where the American flag is flown 24/7 all 365 days of the year. When visiting this memorial you can learn more about the incredible story behind the statue’s picture and more about the U.S. Marine Corps.
Pentagon Memorial
The Pentagon Memorial is the first national memorial dedicated to the events of September 11th, 2001. Memorial Unit benches surround the grounds and represent the 184 lives lost that day at the Pentagon. You can also view the Age Wall that grows one inch in height per year of each victims’ age.
