The primary role of a chiller is to cool the liquid in a medium in order to achieve the required temperature. A chiller is also known as an evaporator or condenser. It consists of a coil which is submerged in a heat source, such as water or oil. The coil cools the substance as it absorbs heat from the environment.
There are two types of chilled water systems: single-stage and multistage. In single-stage chillers, water passes through one coil and then returns to another coil for cooling before entering the main circulation loop. In multistage chillers, water passes through several coils and then returns to one or more coils for cooling before entering the main circulation loop.
Different types of chillers are used for different applications. Here are the most common types of chillers:
Pump-type chiller: This type of chiller uses a pump, which circulates water through the system. The pump can be powered by electricity or electricity or steam. Steam-powered pumps are used for larger applications or when water temperature needs to be maintained at a constant temperature.
Piston-type chiller: This type of chiller is usually placed inside an insulated enclosure and equipped with a fan that pushes air into the enclosure to cool it down. The air is then circulated through the system and out to cool other parts of the plant. Piston-type chillers can be powered by either electricity or gas.
Rotary evaporator: An evaporator is an internal part of a chiller that removes heat from hot water by converting it into cold water via evaporation process
Heat Exchanger Type Chiller: These are used in industrial plants where heat exchangers are required between two separate systems, such as air conditioning/heating and cooling/heating
Air-cooled chillers are the oldest type of chiller, and they’re still being used today in some applications. Air-cooled chillers use a fan to pull air across the heat exchanger, which transfers heat from the coolant to the water. They’re used in applications where an electrical supply isn’t available or where power is not needed for other purposes.
Water-cooled chillers use water as their cooling medium, which reduces the amount of energy required to cool the system compared to air-cooled systems. These systems can also be used with less expensive coolants than air-cooled systems because water is much cheaper than air at standard temperatures (32 degrees F).
Gas-cooled chillers use compressed natural gas (CNG) as their cooling medium instead of water or other liquids. This makes them ideal for applications that require a clean source of energy but don’t have access to electricity or natural gas supplies. CNG allows these systems to operate with low maintenance requirements and relatively high efficiencies compared with other types of chillers.
