With the 2020 Olympics having recently drawn to a close and the UEFA European Football Championship long since passed, you may be looking for your next sporting fix. Whilst the pandemic left 2020 largely devoid of sporting events, the good news is that, because so many events have now been rescheduled, you’ve got more sporting events to look forward to than ever before! A lot of sports pubs are starting to accept bookings for the upcoming events already. Here is a list of some of the upcoming sporting events for the rest of 2021.
2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games – Multi-sport – 24th August – 5th September
If you’ve found yourself missing the excitement of the Olympics, never fear – the delayed 2020 Paralympic games are just around the corner! With 540 events in 22 sports spanning across fifteen days, there’s a lot to look forward to. With two new sports – badminton and taekwondo – coming to the Paralympic games, there is sure to be something interesting for everyone!
The Solheim Cup – Golf – 31st August – 6th September
Taking place in Ohio, this women’s golfing event sees 12 players from Europe and 12 players from the U.S. come together to compete. The female counterpart to the Ryder Cup, the Solheim Cup takes place every two years and is sure to be an interesting watch for golf fans.
The Ryder Cup – Golf – 24th – 26th September
The Ryder Cup was originally set to take place in September 2020. Now rescheduled, this men’s golfing event will take place in 2021 in Wisconsin. Normally taking place on alternating years to the Solheim Cup, golf fans have twice as much to look forward to this year.
World Urban Games – Multi-sport – TBD
Fairly new to the sporting world, the World Urban Games were first held in 2019. Focusing on youth and urban culture, this multi-sport event includes basketball, BMX freestyle, breaking (break dancing), flying disk, parkour and freestyle roller skating. Whilst an official date has not yet been set, it is speculated that this event will be held in October 2021. If you’re looking for a sporting event that’s got some edge to it, the World Urban Games are definitely worth keeping an eye out for!
UCI Track Cycling World Championships – Cycling – 20th – 24th October
Originally set to be held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, this track cycling event will now take place in Roubaix, France. This annual event includes various cycling races in different distances and disciplines, including keirin, individual pursuit, team pursuit, time trial, scratch race, points race, sprint, team sprint, omnium and the madison (for men only). With plenty of variety, this is sure to be an exciting event for cycling fans!
2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup – Cricket – October 17th – 14th November
This biennial event is making a comeback – after 2016, the originally planned 2018 event was dropped and the pandemic led to more delays in 2020. Finally, after five years of waiting, cricket fans will be pleased to hear that the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is finally going ahead in the final months of 2021.
