7 Non-Surgical Treatments For Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are a common condition that affects up to 25% of adults. They are caused by the weakening of valves in the veins, which results in blood flowing in the wrong direction and pooling in the legs. Varicose veins can be unsightly and cause discomfort, pain, and swelling. While surgical options such as vein stripping and ablation are available to treat varicose veins, many people prefer to avoid surgery. Luckily, Bhupinder Singh MD offers several non-surgical treatments that effectively reduce the appearance of varicose veins and relieve symptoms.

Here are non-surgical treatments for varicose veins.

    1.   Compression stockings

Compression stockings are tight-fitting stockings that are worn on the legs. They work by applying pressure to the veins, which helps to improve circulation and reduce swelling. They are available in different compression levels, and your doctor can help you choose the right level for you. They are also available in different styles, such as knee-high, thigh-high, and pantyhose, so you can choose the most comfortable style.

    2.    Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a procedure in which your doctor injects a chemical solution into your varicose vein. The solution makes the vein gradually break down and disappear. This is a relatively simple and quick procedure that can be done in a doctor’s office and requires minimal recovery time. Sclerotherapy is commonly used to treat small varicose veins.

    3.    Endovenous laser therapy

Endovenous laser therapy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses laser energy to seal off the affected vein. A small catheter is inserted into the vein, and laser energy is directed through the catheter to the vein wall. The vein collapses and seals shut as a result of the heat. This procedure is usually done under local anesthesia and takes about 30-40 minutes for each leg.

    4.    Radiofrequency ablation

Radiofrequency ablation is a procedure in which radiofrequency energy is used to heat and shrink the affected vein. A small catheter is inserted into the vein, and radiofrequency energy is delivered through the catheter to the vein wall. The vein collapses and close as a result of the heat. This procedure is usually done under local anesthesia and takes about 30-40 minutes for each leg.

    5.    Microphlebectomy

Microphlebectomy is a minimally invasive procedure in which small varicose veins are removed through tiny incisions. It is typically performed on larger varicose veins and is performed under local anesthesia.

    6.    Ambulatory phlebectomy

Ambulatory phlebectomy is similar to microphlebectomy but is done through small incisions. It is done as an outpatient procedure and requires no stitches.

    7.    Lifestyle changes

Making certain lifestyle changes can help reduce varicose veins’ symptoms and prevent them from worsening. These include exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding prolonged sitting or standing, and elevating the legs. Wearing compression stockings during the day and avoiding high heels can also help.

Varicose veins are a common condition affecting many people, but the good news is that several non-surgical treatments are available. Compression stockings, sclerotherapy, RFA, microphlebectomy, ambulatory phlebectomy, and lifestyle changes can all effectively reduce the appearance of varicose veins and relieve symptoms. If you suffer from varicose veins, it is important to consult a doctor or a specialist to determine the best course of treatment for you.
