Rolex Cellini: The Dress Watch You Must Never Second-Guess

When you think of Rolex, you probably think of their sportier models like Submariner or dressier ones like the Datejust and Day-Date. However, you should remember that the brand has a range of luxury dress watches that has a thinner and more streamlined approach: the Rolex Cellini.

The Rolex Cellini often gets overlooked in the watch industry. But, to be fair, it’s one of the most elegant Rolex watches on the market, boasting a timeless and creative designand there’s more to it that proves it’s worth the look.

Rolex Cellini: History, Popular Cellini Watches, and Pricing

Rolex Cellini, regarded as the tuxedo dress watch in the line of luxury Rolex watches, is inspired by classical design and high-end luxury aesthetics. Rene-Paul Jeanneret, Rolex director, and innovator behind the Rolex Cellini drew inspiration for the design from 16th-century goldsmith, musician, and sculptor Benvenuto Cellini, after whom the line is named.

First released in 1928, the Cellini is in striking contrast with the sporty-looking Rolex models. It features clean and sleek dials with its design based upon a mathematical divine proportion called the Golden Ratio, which looks good to the eyes.

Over the years, Rolex introduced various versions of the Cellini model such as the Cellini Cestello and Cellini Quartz, both of which are already discontinued today but remain in demand in the second-hand market. Until recently, Rolex announced three new Cellini models which are available in new sizes, new cases, and new movements.

The Rolex Cellini price ranges anywhere from $12,000 up to more than $25,000. But, when you purchase a pre-owned Cellini, you can own the same luxury wristwatch for a fraction of the price.

Rolex Cellini: The Dressier Alternative

Rolex manufactures the movement for all their watches, the Cellini model included. It has the caliber 3135 movements which are similar to the ones used with Rolex’s sports watches. Vintage versions have 35mm cases but the latest models go up to 39mm, with 50m water-resistant capacity.

Available in white or rose gold with a dark or light dial, the classic watch looks good on any wrist and is appropriate for formal business or black-tie events—weddings, cocktail parties, etc. They come with either black or brown straps, finished with gold buckles that match the cases. But, a distinct feature of the Cellini is the elongated hour markers that point to a minute and hour track instead of numbers. In classic Rolex fashion, the model sports an oignon-style crown, a fluted bezel, both of which contribute to its clean and elegant look.

The Cellini is a watch of choice of many figures in the world of music, art, and opera. Former President Barack Obama has also been spotted wearing a Cellini on a few occasions.

Most Popular Rolex Cellini Watches

Rolex Cellini Prince

Introduced in 1928, the Rolex Cellini Prince was the first Rolex manufactured in quantity to earn Chronometric certification. It has a distinct rectangular shape and a transparent case back that separates it apart from the watches during that period. It is available in five versions, each featuring different combinations of precious metals and dials: 18K Everose, white or yellow gold case with dials ranging from silver, black, champagne, silver/black, and pink.

Rolex Cellini Time

What makes this timepiece special is its humble character that lends a sense of sophistication. The watch is available in different colors and designs—either in 18K white or Everose gold with a white or black dial in a 39mm case.

Rolex Cellini Dual Time

This model gets its name from its two time-zone feature, where the second time zone is shown in a sub-dial. It comes with a black or silver dial in a choice of 18K white or Everose gold. Did we mention that its dial features a “rayon flammé de la gloire” guilloché motif.

Other models from the Rolex Cellini line include the Date, Castello, Danos, Moonphase, and Cellissimo. The model and the serial number of each watch are distinctively engraved on the case back.

Latest Rolex Cellini Update

As earlier mentioned, the Rolex Cellini has recently made a comeback. In 2005, the Rolex Cellini Prince received an update that pays tribute to the Rolex model from 1928. It was overhauled yet again with the release of the new Cellini models at Baselworld in 2014. The new Cellini collection also includes the new Cellini Date and Cellini Dual Time, featuring a two-time zone complication and day/night indicator.

The Cellini Watch for You

The Cellini is like the middle child of the Rolex family who tends to go unnoticed. But, the way it turns down various Rolex details like the fluted bezel and its more refined features make it the handsome guy of the flock that deserves a look.
