Tooth Extraction 101: Here’s What You Must Know

As the name suggests, tooth extraction is about extracting/pulling a tooth. There are various reasons why you may need tooth extraction, including tooth decay, crowded mouth, infection or risk of infection, and periodontal disease. If you are visiting a dentist in Dedham, MA, for this procedure, here’s what you need to know.

    What happens during tooth extraction?

Typically, your dentist will use local anesthesia before proceeding with tooth extraction. For some cases, general anesthesia could be necessary. The extraction process is fairly simple, but in some cases, the dentist may have to cut gum and bone tissue to reach the roots. Once the tooth is loose, it is pulled out, following a blood clot that will form in the socket. If the dentist had to cut through the gums to pull the tooth, the patient might need a few stitches.

    Is tooth extraction safe?

Yes, getting a tooth pulled is usually a safe procedure for most people. However, you could be at a higher risk of infection, and therefore, your dentist may prescribe medications, especially antibiotics, accordingly. Let your dentist know if you have cardiovascular diseases, have undergone bypass surgery, have a weak immune system, or have liver disease.

What to do after tooth extraction?

Your dentist will explain the aftercare for tooth extraction, but you can do the following:

    • Take painkillers and antibiotics as needed
    • Apply ice bag immediately to counter swelling
    • Relax for a day or more
    • Avoid excessive rinsing for the next 24 hours
    • Avoid drinking from a straw for 24 hours
    • Avoid or minimize smoking
    • Eat soft food that doesn’t need much chewing.

When to call your dentist again?

Most patients heal relatively quickly after a tooth extraction procedure, but you may need to call your dentist again if you find signs of infection. Watch out for signs like chills and fever, and if there is nausea or vomiting, call your dentist or healthcare provider immediately.

    Does tooth extraction hurt?

Since local anesthesia is used, you wouldn’t feel much pain during tooth extraction, but there could be considerable pressure and discomfort during the procedure. This is completely normal, and most patients don’t have much to worry about once the pulling is done.

A tooth extraction can be performed by your general dentist or a dental surgeon. Just make sure that you select a reliable and known dental clinic in Dedham for the procedure.
