Visiting a dentist in Fullerton for root canal treatment: An overview

If you have a deep cavity that has caused damage to the pulp, your dentist may recommend a root canal treatment. Also called RCT, this is a common procedure that involves removing the decay and the pulp of the infected tooth with tissues and filling the space with special dental materials. A crown is usually placed on the top to add to the strength of the teeth. If you are visiting a dentist in Fullerton, CA, for the procedure, here’s what you need to know.

Signs that you need root canal therapy

If you have an abscess on the gums or have pain in a tooth, the chances are high that there is an active infection. Some patients also experience severe pain and sensitivity to hot and hold. It is also possible to have no symptoms at all. If your dentist takes an X-ray expecting damage to a tooth, they may recommend going for RCT. The procedure is usually recommended when the decay has reached the pulp or when there is an active infection inside of the tooth.

    The procedure in detail

You may need multiple appointments to get a root canal procedure done at a clinic. Your dentist will create an access opening on the tooth, which allows them to access the root canals inside. Premolars usually have two canals, while molars have three to four canals. Next, your dentist will use special files used in root canal procedures to remove the tissues, the pulp, and decay from the tooth. Your dentist may use a temporary filling and ask you to return for a second appointment. During the next appointment, they will clean the tooth with antibacterial washes and use a permanent filling. You may need to get a crown later.

    Does the procedure hurt?

Generally, root canal treatment is done under local anesthesia, and you wouldn’t feel any pain at all. If your dentist finds that you are likely to experience pain after the use of dental files, they will recommend a painkiller or two. Additional antibiotics can be prescribed to accelerate the healing process.

    Final word

A dental crown is like a cap that’s usually placed after the root canal is done. Because the tooth is now hollow and weak, a crown can help restore full function. Talk to your dentist if you have any concerns. With root canal treatment, you can expect to prevent an extraction, which could mean spending huge on dental implants.
