Microneedling For Acne Scars : Does Treatment Really Work?

If you’re someone that’s been struggling with the pockmarks and scarring that acne can leave in its wake, there’s a high probability that you’ve tried everything to get rid of them. Whether talking about masks, serums or cream, there are a ton of topical products that you can use to diminish their appearance, but what about microneedling for acne scars? Is it worth it? Does it actually work?

In short, yes it does, as the process encourages the skin to create new collagen, helping it to repair itself, whilst also getting rid of those boxcar, ice-pick and rolling scars that you’ve been forced to get used to having.

So, How Does Microneedling For Acne Scars Work?

The tools that are used during the process include tiny needles of between a half a millimeter and one millimeter in width. These needles gently penetrate the skin, leaving behind tiny wounds as they do. So tiny are the puncture holes they leave that you might not even be able to see them, however, the process won’t have gone unnoticed in the physical makeup of your skin.

Your skin automatically knows that it has been wounded, so in an attempt to repair itself, it produces extra collagen. It’s this reaction that helps to smooth over those wrinkles and fine lines.

How Long Does It Take to Work?

Like many types of restorative skin care treatments, microneedling for acne scars can take a little while before noticeable improvements occur. It’s usually only a few treatments before this starts to happen and it’s at this point that many see a more even skin tone appearing.

Not only is this new skin smoother and clearer, but it should also be brighter and firmer and when those acne scars have evened out, you’ll have a better overall complexion.

How Often Should You Have the Treatment?

Ask your dermatologist about the treatment and they’ll suggest that you have a treatment each 4-6 weeks in order for the best results to be achieved. In total, you should have 3-4 treatments and then an annual follow up once this has been completed.

    Are There Any Side Effects?

Microneedling for acne scars is one of the gentler scar-reduction options you can choose, however, you are breaking the skin, so you may experience a little inflammation, bruising or soreness. To achieve optimal results, you should avoid going out into the sun for long periods afterwards and be sure to drink plenty of water prior to and after your treatment.

Typically speaking, though, most people receiving the treatment have little or no side effects at all, meaning that you can get back to your usual routine within a day of having it done. Certain types of people should avoid micro-needling, such as pregnant ladies or those with eczema, so it’s always a good idea to talk to your dermatologist before you engage in anything – just to be sure.
